What is Hatha Yoga?

The word "Hatha" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Ha" (sun) and "Tha" (moon), symbolizing the balance of opposites such as strength and flexibility, effort and relaxation, and activity and rest.

Hatha yoga is often considered a foundational style of yoga, making it suitable for beginners as well as experienced practitioners. Its primary goal is to create harmony between the body and mind, making it a preparatory step for more advanced yoga practices like Raja yoga or meditation.

Hatha yoga classes typically focus on slower-paced, deliberate movements and poses, making it accessible to individuals seeking a gentle yet effective way to improve physical and mental well-being.

What's involved in a Hatha yoga class?

A yoga class described as 'Hatha" will typically involve a set of physical postures (yoga poses) and breathing techniques. These are typically practised more slowly and with more static holds than a Vinyasa flow or Ashtanga class. And indeed, that is how we describe our Hatha yoga classes on EkhartYoga.

Literally however, Hatha means 'force" and is more traditionally defined as 'the yoga of force", or 'the means of attaining a state of yoga through force". So Hatha yoga can be considered as anything you might do with the body, including:
