What is Ashtanga Yoga?

Ashtanga yoga is a traditional and rigorous style of yoga that follows a specific sequence of poses, designed to build strength, flexibility, and mental clarity. The name "Ashtanga" means "eight limbs," referring to the eightfold path outlined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. This practice is known for its discipline and structure, making it ideal for those who thrive on routine.

Key Features of Ashtanga Yoga:

  • Set Sequences: Practiced in a specific order, there are six series: Primary, Intermediate, and four Advanced series.
  • Breath and Movement: Each pose is linked with a specific breath pattern (Ujjayi breath) and transitions (vinyasa).
  • Bandhas (Energy Locks): Focus on engaging core energy locks to enhance stability and control.
  • Drishti (Gaze Point): Each pose includes a prescribed focal point to aid concentration.
  • Self-Practice: Often practiced as "Mysore style," where students progress through the sequence at their own pace under the guidance of a teacher.

Common Components in an Ashtanga Yoga Practice:

  • Sun Salutations: The practice begins with several rounds of Sun Salutations (A and B) as a warm-up.
  • Standing Poses: A sequence of foundational standing postures.
  • Sitting Poses: Includes forward bends, twists, and hip openers.
  • Backbends: Deep backbends to build strength and flexibility.
  • Finishing Sequence: Inversions and relaxation poses to conclude the practice.
  • Savasana: A final relaxation to integrate the benefits of the practice.

Ashtanga yoga requires dedication and consistency, making it a rewarding choice for those seeking a structured and disciplined approach to yoga. It’s suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners, with each series offering increasing levels of complexity.
